This is a scarce and captivating pictorial map presenting the Ancient World in a manner most suitable for children as evident by its title, "A Child’s Map of the Ancient World." The map was created by Alice York and published in 1926 by The John Day Company, Inc.

Designed to educate and captivate young minds, the map transforms the complex tapestry of the ancient world into a vivid and accessible visual narrative. Centered on the Mediterranean basin and extending to parts of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, the map depicts the great civilizations of antiquity including those of Egypt, Greece, Rome, Persia, and beyond, using bold color blocks, playful iconography, and charming, simplified illustrations. Landmasses are rendered in warm ochre tones while the seas are a bright, contrasting blue, setting the stage for hundreds of small scenes showing everything from Hannibal crossing the Alps to the spread of early Christianity.

The map is surrounded by an elaborate illustrated border that doubles as a historical timeline. Along the top, bottom, and sides are rows of ancient rulers, deities, philosophers, and mythic figures—from Ra and Moses to Pericles, Confucius, and Julius Caesar—each drawn in a style that balances historical reverence with childlike imagination. Mythology and history intertwine throughout the composition, with depictions of Minos, Heracles, and Athena appearing alongside Alexander the Great, Caesar Augustus, and Hammurabi. This blending of fact and legend was a popular pedagogical approach in the early 20th century, aimed at sparking curiosity and a foundational understanding of the ancient world in younger audiences.

Published at a time when educational reform was emphasizing visual learning and imaginative engagement, this 1926 map reflects the era’s enthusiasm for making history approachable and entertaining. Alice York’s artwork stands out for its charm, clarity, and historical scope, making this piece both a collectible and a valuable artifact of early 20th-century educational design.
