This is a monumental 15-sheet folding map of the Spanish/Austrian Netherlands published by Etienne Louis Crépy as a reissue of the renowned work originally created by Eugène Henri Fricx.

The initial release of Fricx's map occurred between 1706-1712, followed by a later edition in 1727, comprising 24 map sheets. Notably, the 24th and final sheet was issued fifteen years after the initial set of 23 sheets. Crépy's edition, produced in Paris, incorporates modifications compared to the original, extending its coverage to nearly all of Belgian territory as well as portions of northern France.

The map features a large and elaborate title cartouche with a horse, cannons, and flags bursting from the sea.The extensive title translates contained within to the following...

Map of the provinces of the Netherlands, including the counties of Flanders, Hainaut, Cambrai, the Duchy of Brabant, parts of the Duchies of Luxembourg, Limbourg, Jülich, the Bishopric of Liège, Boulenois, and the Picardy border. Compiled from the notes of Eugene Henry Fricx and expanded with the latest observations. These highly accurate and detailed maps are essential for military encampments and marches.

Eugène-Henri Fricx (1644-1730) was a cartographer active in Brussels during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in Brussels, Fricx gained recognition for his significant contributions to cartography, particularly for his work on mapping the Spanish and Austrian Netherlands.

Fricx based his maps on various French sources and the historical context of cartographic work lies within the broader geopolitical landscape of the Spanish Netherlands during a period marked by conflicts and shifting alliances. His meticulous mapping and attention to detail made his works highly regarded and valuable too of war planning, particularly in making decisions on encampments and marches. Fricx's maps not only served practical military purposes but also contributed to the understanding of the region's geography during a crucial time in European history.

Condition: Maps are in B+ condition, showing signs of are and ware but fully intact and without any major tears or holes to the linen. Soiling and some staining is apparent in places but overall the entire work is quite clean presenting a dark print impression throughout.
