By: Jacques Nicolas Bellin
Date: 1769 (dated) Paris
Dimensions: 22.25 x 33.5 inches (57 x 85 cm)
This is a beautiful antique nautical chart of the east coast of England, focusing on the counties of Suffolk Kent and Essex as well as the entrance to the Thames River. The map extends into England just enough to include the city of London. The right hand portion of the map features rhumb lines, depth soundings, and many shallow sand banks are depicted and colored. A small portion of the Belgian coast appears in the lower right.
Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" which roughly translates to the Chief Engineer of the French Hydrographical Office.
Condition: This map is in A condition with beautiful hand color over a dark plate impression on clean and heavy paper. The right margin is narrow and there is a short tear in the top margin that does not invade the map image.
