1789 Charte vom Konigreich Norwegen
DESCRIPTION
This large map of Norway is from the Maior Atlas Superiore published by the Homann Heirs. It is based on the work of Frederick de Wit in the 17th century with Norway depicted in two parts, so as to better utilize the surface area of the folio sheet. The southerly region is depicted in detail in the main map, with northern Norway presented in a large inset in the upper left quadrant. A smaller inset below it shows the Faroe Islands. The top margin features the map title in French.
The map is attributed to Franz Ludwig Gussefeld, a cartographer who worked with the firm of Homann’s Heirs in the late decades of the 18th century. Highly detailed, the map shows all cities and towns, fjords, rivers and other waterways, mountains and hills. An elaborate title cartouche including a legend features a heavily wooded pine forest along with implements used for mining and shipping.
