1832 Map of the States of Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Arkansas Territory.
By: Hinton, Simpkin & Marshall
Date: 1832 (dated) London
Dimensions: 16 x 10.5 inches (40.6 x 26.7 cm)
This interesting map of Mississippi, Louisiana and the Arkansas Territory is an early British publication of separate states and territories of the USA. The country had been founded just slightly more than half a century before this map was published. While maps of the newly created country had been published within a short time following the Revolutionary War, maps depicting separate states were not yet common.
The states and their cities, towns and settlements are denoted, and the territory of Arkansas, which would become a state within a few years, is included. Indigenous Indian cultures, their territories and settlements are named. Roads, trails and byways, natural geologic formations are depicted and named, including streams, rivers and lakes, and a portion of the Gulf of Mexico is depicted. Large areas of swamp and bayou territories are depicted, and in one place is a warning to watch out for alligators.
Condition: This hand coloured map is in A condition.
