This pictorial map of Mexico is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography. 

Mexico takes up the center of the map, with Guatemala and the United States shown bordering the country. The map highlights important cities of the country like Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Hermosillo. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. The upper right hand corner shows Hernán Cortés meeting with Montezuma in Tenochtitlán. Also pictured are cacti, fruit, coffee, Aztec carvings, oil rigs, a portrait of Agustín de Iturbide, and a portrait of Maximilien I, the only Emperor of the Second Mexican Empire (1861-67). 

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
