This pictorial map of European scientific development is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.

The map shows the whole of the European continent, highlighting important cities like Paris, Madrid, and Stockholm, as well as smaller cities like Tirana and Varsovie (Warsaw). Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. On the left side of the map is the “Voiture de Cugnot” (Cugnot’s Car), a self-propelled land vehicle designed in 1770 by the French inventor Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot––effectively the world’s first automobile. Also pictured are Louis Pasteur, Étienne Montgolfier, and Denis Papin, among others.

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.

Condition: Map is in A condition with full margins and bright colors.
