This impressive series of prints offers a hilltop or bird-eye-view of the African city of Lovango, which at the time of publication was the center of control from the Congo. This single folio sheet was published as part of Chatelain's monumental Atlas Historique, a seven volume world atlas that provided among its many wonderful and informative maps, more information on indigenous cultures around the globe than any other publication of its time or prior it.
This single sheet features an abundance of written information(in French) on the city of Lovango and the customs of the kingdom. Printed illustrations include ways in which royalty is carried, warriors of the Congo, the election of their king, and a view of Basa or San Salvador, to list a few.
Condition: This print is in A condition with a strong impression on clean paper and ample margins on all sides. Some light paper toning and soiling exists along the centerfold which is quite common among these maps. A short marginal tear along the bottom has been repaired on the verso and does not come near the image.
