This is an intriguing map of of Washington D.C. showing location of white and colored public schools at the end of the 19th century. The individual names of all public schools are given and identified with blue dots for white schools, and red dots for colored schools. If a schools is rented and not owned, the letter "R" appears next to its location.
While the distribution of white and colored schools is fairly even throughout the city, the white schools are divided up into six districts, while the colored schools are spread out among only two districts. This undoubtedly stretched the resources of colored schools far more than that of white children. In all, there were a total of 23 schools for colored children and 47 schools for white children.
This map was one of twelve statistical maps produced in an effort to present large-scale improvements in the infrastructure of the city since the Greene maps of 1880. Each map was drawn on an identical scale and included the prefix “Statistical Map No" before each unique title. Above the title is a full list of avenues names along with their width in feet.
This map and its counterparts offer a unique glimpse into the state of development in the Capitol of the United States just before the turn of the 20th Century.
Condition: This map is in B+ condition, originally issued folding with some separations along the fold lines. The map has been professionally linen-backed with any fold separations filled in by an artist's hand.
