A striking example of Chatelain's antique map of Southern Africa with Madagascar that was published as part of his monumental 'Atlas Historique' which was released as seven volumes between 1705 and 1720.

This beautifully engraved map of South Africa and Madagascar is not only one of the most attractive of its time, but one of the most accurately and scientifically annotated as well. Annotations describe the area depicted in great detail, and include information regarding river systems, mountains, mines, lakes, bays and ports. Settlements including forts, ports and cities are described in detail and the presence of the Hottentots is noted. In the inset in the lower right quadrant he describes indigenous peoples of each region, describing some as very robust, others as very dark, in some regions the air is sweet and the inhabitants not very strong, in another some people fight like lions, etc.

Condition: This map is in A- condition with some toning along the lower portion of the centerfold.
