Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a man of many talents including a naturalist, mathematician and cosmologist. His work on the "Natural History of Animals" is widely regarded as an important step toward the modern theory of evolution. Buffon promoted the idea that species change over time, which has become the cornerstone of the modern of evolutionary theory.
