This fascinating sea chart, an original ‘blue back’ by James Imray, was an important navigational tool used by navigators of the Pacific in the 19th century. The chart covers the southern tip of the continent to slightly northeast of Delagoa Bay on the east coast. It also depicts the southwestern tip of the island of Madagascar.

This chart highly details the region covered to the extent possible at the time it was published. The remarkable detail of all coastal areas would have been invaluable to navigators. It includes serious warnings and cautionary notes regarding areas where it was necessary to exercise extreme caution, such as in one of its seventeen insets in which the following cautionary note is written. “Caution. As the light at the end of the Breakwater is placed on a travelling platform, and is moved farther in from the end of the Pier in rough weather, vessels must keep well eastward of the light.”

Numerous other cautionary notes and bits of important information are to be found throughout the map. The insets depict harbors, ports, bays and islands of the area in great detail, with depth sounding in English fathoms to the level of low water spring-tides. Heights of mountains and other elevations are expressed in feet.

Condition: This map is in B- condition with dust soiling and some staining.
