An impressive Japanese world map, meticulously hand-colored and copper-engraved on the Mercator projection. The map folds neatly into its original cloth-covered card covers, complete with a title label that translates to "Diagram of the Earth's Nations."

This large, Japanese world map is color-coded by country with extensive detail given to physical topography and hydrography. Hundreds of place names with additional details fill terrestrial region of the map. The map is also traversed by Isothermal lines and small arrows indicating the path of oceanic currents. A decorative border frames the map, showcasing various national flags, with Japan's flag prominently positioned at the top center.

The extensive text accompanying the map provides concise geographical details, including major cities, railroad networks, measurements, currencies, and more. An explanatory note indicates that the map is derived from a Meiji 3 (1870) publication by an American geographer, likely Samuel Augustus Mitchell.

Condition: Map is in B condition, issued folding with light ware and staining to the covers. Numerous worm tracks and holes are apparent but have been professionally restored with archival Japanese tissue on the verso.
