A scarce celebratory bird's-eye view of the Brooklyn Bridge on the day of its inauguration, May 24, 1883. This hand-colored lithograph print was published by the Franklin Square Lithographic Company in the office of the Librarian of Congress, for the Judge Publishing Company, 1883.
The vibrant panoramic scene captures a lively scene of a parade and horse drawn carriages traversing the bridge connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn for this first time. A multitude of boats both machine and wind powered fill the East River while dozens of onlookers can be found on rooftops taking in the whole scene.
As noted in the print, construction began on the Brooklyn Bridge an January 3, 1870 and took just over four years to complete. A litany facts pertaining to the size and scope of the bridge is given below the title along with the final cost of $15,000,000. On either side of this description, distinction is given to the engineers, draughtsman, master mechanic, superintendent of masonry, and the general foreman of laborers responsible for the construction of the bridge.
The Brooklyn Bridge stands as a significant architectural milestone, representing an early form of a steel-wire suspension bridge. This structure showcases a pioneering design, combining elements of both cable-stayed and suspension bridges, utilizing vertical and diagonal suspender cables. Condition: This original lithograph print is in B condition with on tear extending well into the image from the right margin. This tear is restored as the entire print has been professionally linen backed for preservation and presentation purposes.
