Map of Oregon and Upper California From the Surveys of John Charles Fremont and other Authorities

By: John Charles Fremont / Charles Preuss

Date: 1848 (Published) Baltimore

Dimensions: 19.4 x 16.75 (49.3 cm x 42.5 cm)

The second and smaller issue of John C. Fremont's seminal map of the American West, showing much of present-day Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and California, or what was formerly Upper California and part of Mexico.

This map of the American West is one of the most highly respected of its time, despite Fremont’s famous topographical error showing an east-west mountain range across the unexplored area of the Great Basin. The map was changed over time, with this one concentrating on California, but also including parts of present-day Arizona and Utah. Most topographical renderings are quite accurate, and this map is considered the most important nineteenth-century map of the area.

The El Dorado or Gold Regions are shown on the south fork of the American River and the upper course of the Feather River. Native peoples are located throughout much of the southeastern portion of the map. Additionally, the border between the United States and Mexico is depicted as it was prior to the Gadsden Purchase of 1854 that would establish the southern border as we know it today.

Condition: This map is in A condition. Issued folding with no separations along fold lines. Some paper toning and foxing is apparent, most notably, a spot near center of the map, which in our opinion adds a natural element of authenticity to its age and originality.
