This antique topographic map of Canyon de Chelly National Monument was produced in 1938 by the U,S.G.S. It is a rare "unedited advance sheet, subject to correction," as noted at the top. Also noted in the map is that the boundary of Canyon de Chelly is not marked on the ground, due to land plats and topography being unreconciled.
The canyon is located in Apache County, Arizona, and bordered by the Navajo Indian Reservation. The steep cliffs that dive down to ravines are illustrated by the topographical lines that make up this map. Smaller canyons and natural landmarks are notes and named throughout the map.
About Canyon De Chelly Nation Monument
This National Monument is in Apache County, Arizona, which is the northeast part of the state. The land is owned by the Navajo Nation and attracts 444,000 visitors per year. This vast park is 83,000 acres and was authorized by President Herbert Hoover in 1931. The land has been occupied for 4,000 years, offering sites of Pueblo villages, prehistoric rock art, and Spider Rock Spire, which is 800 feet tall. Visitors can also drive, hike, horseback and camp.
Condition: This map is in B+ condition with some damage, mostly in the top left portion that is blank. The map has been professionally linen backed for preservation and presentation purposes.
