This is an incredibly detailed map of a section of Greenwich Village in Lower Manhattan (Ward 15 and part of Ward 9), located in what is now called NoHo (or the area north of Houston street). Lithographed and hand colored in 1879, the Bromley & Robinson Company published this map to show every structure, road, railway, and other important information for the city of New York.

Oriented slightly southwest, the map shows Ward 15 as between Houston and 14th Streets and Sixth and Fourth Streets, with Ward 9 located in Greenwich Village just to the west. The map includes the iconic Washington Square Park, as well as hotels and institutions like the Globe Theatre, the New York Hotel, and police and fire stations in the area.

On the right hand side is a map key labeled “Explanations” which gives symbols for things such as fire hydrants, steam railroads, street railways, and the original farm property lines that existed before the grid we know today was realized in 1811.

With fascinating historical interest and meticulous detail, Bromley and Robinson’s map of Ward 15 and part of Ward 9 of New York City is a wonderful example of late 19th-century mapmaking.

Condition: This map is in B condition. A strong impression with even toning throughout. Slight foxing and discoloration around the edges. Map was separated at centerfold but has since been joined with archival materials.
