This pictorial map of Central Asia and Siberia is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography. 

Eastern Russia takes up the center of the map, with China, Japan, and Central Asia also shown. The map highlights important cities of the region like Vladivostok, Samarkand, and Tehran. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. The upper left hand corner shows the mausoleum of Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur. Also pictured are the Mosque of Samarra in Iraq; the Samoyed, Manchurian, and Mongol people groups; and Mount Ararat. 

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
