An original color example of Mercator's map of England, also showing the Isle of Man and portions of Ireland, Scotland, Holland, Belgium and France. This map offers a unique glimpse into the cartographic makeup of England at the turn of the 17th century when modern mapmaking was really coming into form.
Cities, ports, churches, estates and forts identified throughout the map, and the work is embellished by a lovely frigate sailing off the coast between Holland and Suffolk and a strap-work title cartouche that includes a scale of distance just below. Names of the surrounding seas and oceans are offered in impressive calligraphy that distinguishes Mercator's maps from those of his contemporaries.
Mercator's name is well known around the world. Most people who know this name associate it with maps, whether or not they actually know who Gerard Mercator was or what his contributions to cartography and science might have been. While he is most widely recognized for his world map projection he had a large number of other accomplishments, including living to the age of 82. Condition: This map is in B condition with some separations that have been repaired on the verso using archival methods and materials. Two of the separations are an affect of the oxidation of green pigment, which occurs with maps that have original color.
