1856 Carte du Golfe du Bengale et des Cotes de l’Hindoustan
By: Aime Robiquet
Date: 1856 (Published) Paris
Dimensions: 26.4 x 38.4 inches (67.1 x 97.54 cm)
This scarce large-scale French sea chart by Aime Robiquet features India, the west coast of Malaysia and many islands of the area. Robiquet prepared a number of maps and sea charts such as this large-scale chart of the Bay of Bengal and its neighboring waters.
The map would have been of great value to navigators in the vast area covered by it. Minute details such as depth sounding at different distances from the shorelines, names of ports, settlements, towns and cities are noted as are atolls and the varying depths of the sea in the areas surrounding them.
The chart has three inset maps depicting the areas near Bombay, Amerst and Akiab (Sittwe, Myanmar). In the upper left corner the image has been extended in order to accommodate the coastal areas bordering the port city of modern-day Karachi, Pakistan.
Condition: This map is in B+ condition. There is chipping in places, including an area which just enters the image in the upper left corner. Separations have been repaired with archival material on the verso.
