Date: 1967 (printed) New York

Dimensions: 24.5 x 19 inches (62 x 48 cm)

This is an original map from 1967, detailing the cease-fire lines of the state of Israel after the Six-Day War, a conflict fought from 5 to 10 June 1967 between Israel and a coalition of Arab states comprising Jordan, Syria, and Egypt. The map was produced on behalf of the Diskin Orphan Home of Israel.

Tensions were rising in the months leading up to the conflict, resulting in Israel launching a series of pre-emptive air strikes against Egyptian airfields. Israel soon began a ground offensive on the Gaza Strip (then controlled by Egypt) and the Sinai Peninsula, gaining control of the entire peninsula at the end of the sixth day of war. The Israeli victory in the war boosted their international status and caused Egyptian president Nasser to resign, though it was directly responsible for the displacement of around 285,000 to 325,000 Palestinians and 100,000 Syrians, who fled or were expelled from the West Bank in the aftermath of the conflict.

The map depicts both the cease-fire lines drawn in the aftermath of the Six-Day War and the climate of the region, depicting the fertile areas around the Mediterranean and Dead Sea, with the desert between them and in the Sinai Peninsula. On either side of the map are twelve illustrations showing the Twelve Tribes of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Sebulun (Zebulun), Joseph, and Benjamin. According to Hebrew scriptures, these twelve were direct descendants of the biblical patriarch Jacob (also known as Israel), who collectively formed the Israelite nation.

At the bottom of the map is a line from Deuteronomy XI:12, which reads, “A Land which the Lord thy G’d cares for: the eyes of the Lord thy G’d are upon it always…” .

Condition: Map is in A condition, with rich coloring. The map was issued folded but has been flattened for presentation purposes.
