The map of the Caspian Sea reflects the survey work of Russia’s Karl van Verden, which led to the Caspian becoming navigable. The Rio de la Plata (Plata River) and its entire drainage system is beautifully illustrated, from its source in a fictitious lake to its tributary far to the south. Most other details render it one of the most accurate maps of its time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA cartouche in the upper left quadrant frames a dedication to Michelangelo Tamburino, Superior General of the (Jesuitical) Society from 1706-1730. The title cartouche names and defines the map while additional ones serve to describe symbols and to illuminate important parameters of the map. This hand-coloured map is a handsome addition to maps of the region and particularly to that period of time and the struggle between church and state which was taking place in the region.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis remarkable edition was probably issued in Augsburg by Johann Michael Probst, and is thought to be a late state of a plate first engraved by Matthaus Seutter around 1740. This society was founded by British statesman (Lord Chancellor) Henry Broughman for the purpose of making educational materials available to those of the rapidly expanding reading public who had limited financial means and for those who preferred self-education.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn this map Marseille is depicted as it appeared in the third decade of the 19th century. The ancient Massilia dates back to at least 600 BCE when it was founded as a trading post by mariners from the Greek colony of Phocaea on the Aegean Coast of Asia Minor. The city flourished till the middle of the first century BCE when the city backed Pompey the Great rather than Julius Caesar, whose forces captured the city in 49 BCE, and who subsequently directed Roman trade elsewhere.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite this, Massilia stayed a free port which remained the last Western center of Greek learning before falling into ruin. It was revived in the early 10th century by the counts of Provence, and today is a bustling port city. Vestiges of the ancient city are yet extant in areas. Entrance to the port is guarded on either side by fortresses. Fishing has always been an important factor and the food economy of the city is fed by local catch, with a daily fish market still thriving in the Old Port. Rhumb lines radiate from eleven fixed points on the chart, providing precise navigational data for navigators. This chart shows some hazards of the Channel, such as shoals and areas of the coast on either side which are particularly shallow, rendering them unnavigable for larger ships. Ports, cities, towns and islands are delineated and named, including the Isles of Scilly which are located south of Cornwall. The Dutch lost six ships (sources vary) and three fire ships, whereas the French did not lose a vessel. They provided the mainstay for the economy during most of the eighteenth century, and their sites are everywhere delineated. By the time this map was published toward the end of the century, however, the Jamaican sugar economy had begun to decline as famines, hurricanes, colonial wars, and wars of independence disrupted trade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe inset map of Port Royal is of especial interest, as the port had been destroyed by an earthquake on 7 June 1692, at which time two-thirds of the city sank into the sea. The wharves sank at once and within two minutes most of the city had been covered by water to the height of the uppermost rooms of the few houses left standing. The pre-earthquake population had been 6,500 inhabitants living in bout 2,000 buildings, many of which were of brick or stone.
