A scarce city map of New York and the surrounding boroughs produced at the middle of the 19th century to commemorate 79 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

This remarkable antique map presents Manhattan before the addition of Central Park with great detail to the island and the surrounding towns of Brooklyn, Williamsburgh, Green Point, Jersey City, Hoboken, Yorkville, Harlem, Ravenswood, and Astoria.

While this map can easily be identified as a city plan, it also includes various elements of topography and physical geography of  natural features in the area. Also included within the map are several cross section indicating distance between two points on either side of the Hudson and East Rivers as well as Ferry Routes which were of very high importance as no bridges had yet been constructed to connect people in Manhattan with the surrounding boroughs.

An inset map of Long Island showing regional towns, main roads and railroads is included next to an explanation that locates thirty-eight universities and educational institutions, fifteen important public buildings, and twelve "places of amusement," that include theaters, music halls, museums, and gardens. Below the title is the Declaration of Independence in its entirety along with the names of all that signed, surrounded by emblems representing the original thirteen colonies. Vignettes of coal and sail powered riverboats can be found throughout and in the lower left, a view of the city hall of New York.

Condition: This map is in B+ condition with some loss around the margins as well small tears that just enter the decorate border in a few places. The map has been  reinforced with Japanese paper on the verso for preservation purposes.
