This colorful and appealing map appeared in the April 1939 issue of National Geographic Magazine, accompanying an article about Long Island. The map extends from Albany in the north of NY State, south to the Pine Barrens region on the coast to the east of Philadelphia. It extends to eastern Pennsylvania in the west and eastward to the eastern edge of Connecticut and the Atlantic. An inset in the lower right quadrant features New Jersey and the eastern edge of Delaware.
The map shows the region in minute detail including historic monuments, shrines, ruins and noteworthy architecture. Old churches are noted as are battlegrounds, state capitals, county seats, highways, railroads and canals.
The border is especially lovely, featuring vignettes with iconic landscapes, well-known architectural edifices, historical figures and of course the Statue of Liberty. Three beautiful cartouches embellish the map.
