This original 1939 French propaganda poster was designed and published at the beginning of WWII with specific political purpose, echoing the words of then French Prime Minister, Paul Reynaud.
‘We will win because we are the strongest’ is emblazoned in French across the top of the map, which was released before Italy had joined the Axis, at a time when Allied victory seemed assured. The map depicts the enormous geographic imbalance that lent support to this belief at the time, with vast areas of the world such as the USSR, China, and Scandinavia uncoloured, and only the Axis powers including Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic shown in black. Text along the bottom urges the purchase of French war bonds.
Unfortunately the world had seriously underestimated the determination and strength of the Axis powers, with whom Japan joined forces in September 1940. Thus, this map was outdated within a year of its issue. America finally joined the Allies after the bombing of Pearl harbor in 1941.
Condition: This map is in A condition with bold coloring throughout. The map has been linen-backed for preservation and presentation purposes. This is an entirely reversible process.
