ZZMap No 1 of the El Paso & Fort Yuma Wagon Road

This remarkably interesting folding map depicts the territory through which the Yuma Wagon Road made its way, and in fact, a number of routes are indicated on the map. One is the line of the Wagon Road as it was located at the time the map was drawn (1857-1858), another, the Old Wagon Road, with the remaining ones being routes pursued by the exploring parties of the Corps of Engineers.
In addition to the route, the map presents a great deal of topographical information including a surprising number of water holes, springs and rivers all of which are named, as are mountain ranges, settlements, towns and cities, forts, mail stations, missions, Indian villages, and silver and copper mines. Additionally, Texas and Arizona are named and a proposed boundary for Arizona is detailed. Place names for the points through which the Road passed are all named.
The map has an interesting notation which adds an element of interest to it, stating that ‘The topography is only represented in detail when known from actual Surveys or sketches made in the field. The portions in outline are taken from the maps of the Mexican Boundary Commission and of Lt J.G. Parke, Top. Eng. The Rio Grande, Colorado and a portion of the Gila Rivers are taken from the Maps of the Mexican Boundary Commission.’
Condition: This folding map is in B condition. Separations have been expertly repaired with archival material on the verso.
