1796 A Map of the North Western Territory

One of the earliest available maps to focus on the Northwest Territory published in Morse's The American Universal Geography. Established in 1787, the territory is largely empty, reflecting the lack of knowledge of America's new western frontier.
This American-made map was created shortly after the Treaty of Greenville, which granted the United States land rights to many strategic locations such as Chicago (labeled as Chickago), Fort Wayne, and an area just above St. Louis on the Mississippi. Fascinating historical details, such as Simon Girty's store, company lands and Indian villages are detailed throughout the map. Spurious geographical information is also present with Bellin's fictitious islands in Lake Superior, extensive high plains in Michigan, and mountain ranges through central Illinois.
Condition: This map is in B condition, with minor tears along the fold lines and soiling throughout. The right margin has been trimmed.
