Charlemagne (c. 742 – 814) was a medieval emperor who ruled much of Western Europe from 768 to 814. In 771, he was made king of the Franks, a Germanic tribe spread over present day France, western Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Charlemagne made it his mission to unite all Germanic peoples into one kingdom, and to convert his subjects to Christianity, his state religion.
His empire included other regions of Europe as well, such as parts of Spain, and Lombardy in Italy. This map depicts his empire in broad strokes, and in an inset, more closely. The map’s features are extremely detailed and carefully drawn, including texturing in mountains and bodies of water; labels for political divisions, settlements, ports, and topographical features.
When Charlemagne died in 814, his empire encompassed much of Western Europe, and he had ensured the survival of Christianity in the West. Today, he is often referred to as the ‘Father of Europe’. An inset map entitled ‘Tableau de Demembrement de L’Empire de Charlemagne…’ primarily the territories which came under the dominion of the empire of Charlemagne at the end of the IX century.
Adrien-Hubert Brué (1786 - 1832) was a French cartographer active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He held the office of Geographe du Roi and often signed his maps as such. In this position Brué contributed to thousands of maps and numerous atlases. Like most cartographers many of his maps were published posthumously and were common even several decades after his death. They are known for their beauty, their clarity and accuracy. Many of his maps were published posthumously by his partner, Charles Picquet's son and heir, Pierre-Jacques Picquet, and were still being updated and republished decades after his death.
