This superb map of China was originally issued by Jan Jansson in 1657, which was based on an earlier Blaeu map. Blaeu had compiled information from reports made by a Jesuit, Father Martino Martini, who traveled in China from 1643 through 1650.

In this map, China is divided into provinces which are outlined in varying colors. River systems, forested areas and mountainous regions are depicted. All fortifications, towns and cities are delineated. The current map deviates slightly from Jansson’s in its depiction of the Korean peninsula with a cluster of small islands near its southernmost point.

An elaborate title cartouche embellishes the lower left corner, with personages on either side in elaborate attire, and the scale of miles cartouche is surrounded by putti. The map is further embellished with European sailing ships and Chinese junks.

Condition: This map is in A condition. There is uneven toning in places. A slight separation has been repaired with archival material on the verso.
