1816 West India Islands – Grenada / Tobago / Curacao / Trinidad

This is an example of one of the finer early 19th century maps of the islands of present day to depict the islands of Grenada, Tobago, Curacao, and Trinidad. Divided into four sections, the map depicts towns, cities, forts, copper mines, rivers and bays. Some interesting points worth noting include, the insert of Fort Amsterdam on the Dutch controlled island of Curacao and a notation of “impenetrable woods,” on the island of Tobago.
The map was published as part of John Thompson’s “A New General Atlas,” in 1817 out of Edinburgh, Scotland. The atlas acted as a continuation of Pinkerton’s Modern Atlas of 1815 as the resemblance between the two in quite noticeable. Thompson’s atlas adds about twenty maps not included in that of Pinkerton. Nearly half of these extra maps focus on the West India Islands.
Condition: The map is in A condition with bright color over a strong impression. The paper is strong and clean without any holes or tears ample margins for framing on all sides.
