This elegant map of Pompeii was published in 1832 by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. This society was founded by British statesman (Lord Chancellor) Henry Broughman for the purpose of making educational materials available to those of the rapidly expanding reading public who had limited financial means and for those who preferred self-education.

The ancient legendary Italian city of Pompeii, buried for millennia following the fateful eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, is the subject of this map. The city remained buried under ash until its modern era discovery in 1748. While excavations at the time of the making of the map were limited, a close study of the map reveals a surprisingly abundant of information. The map shows the ancient walled city, and great pains were taken to label buildings. A list was compiled of fifty-two known private residences, tombs, temples and public buildings including a basilica; to name a few, the Villa of Julia Felix, the Forum, the Grand Theater, the Temple of Hercules, the Basilica, and the Grand Court. The amphitheatre of Pompeii is drawn in some detail in the upper left quadrant. An inset map in the lower left quadrant shows Vesuvius and vicinity and another shows the layout of a typical Pompeii villa. A decorative view of the site is depicted along the bottom of the map; above it artistic renderings of important buildings.

The excavations of the ancient city drew worldwide attention as more and more of the ruins were excavated and it became possible to understand the luxury which wealthy Romans enjoyed at the time of Vesuvius’ eruption. The site was a must-see for wealthy English men and women who took the requisite ‘Grand Tour’, thus maps such as this were popular not only for armchair travelers but for those who actually visited the site as well.

Condition: This map is in A condition. There is some chipping of the outer edges but not approaching the image. Very light toning along the bottom border.
