This authentic antique hand-colored map by Jan Jansson depicts Macedonia and Thessaloniki when they were part of the Ottoman Empire in the mid 16th century. Two seagoing vessels are depicted and geographical and topographical features are delineated as are territorial borders.
The title cartouche is typical Jansson, this time featuring his favorite putti along with myriad forms of wildlife and domesticated animals and the usual bountiful agricultural products. The scale in the lower left quadrant is topped by a globe and a dapper Laurenberg himself (perhaps) using a caliper, with playful putti to assist him. This map will stir interest in deciphering cartouches.
There is Latin text on the verso describing Macedonia, cities, peoples and locales.
Condition: This map is in B condition with narrow side margins and slight toning and foxing on the margins. Archival tape has been used on the verso on the centerfold separation which slightly enters the image.
