This is an exceptionally detailed map of Ireland produced by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, also referred to as the S.D.U.K. The map shows the Emerald Isle divided into 4 main regions and 32 counties. A statistical table in the lower right gives the size of each county in English acres, the population as of 1831, and the population per square mile. Another table in the top left notes the locations of numerous Round Towers and the status of their completion or condition. Round Towers are medieval stone towers generally found in the vicinity of a church or monastery. The door of the tower faces the west doorway of the church. In this way it has been possible to determine without excavation the approximate site of lost churches, where the tower still exists.

This is an exciting map for any historian or genealogy enthusiast with particular interest in Ireland. The map was made just a few years prior to the Great Irish Potato Famine, which lasted from 1845 – 1849 and resulted in a mass exodus from Ireland to the United States of America. Thus, many of the town names significant to ones ancestry from Ireland should be identifiable on the map.

Condition: This map is in B+ condition with a few rolled folds along the centerfold at the edges of the map. The margins are full and the paper quality is very good.
