Dimensions: 6 x 9 inches (15.24 cm x 22.9 cm)

This hand colored authentic antique map by Dutch cartographer Pieter van der AA is an exceptionally unusual and rare map of the east coast of America. It was prepared to illustrate the Dutch edition of journals which described the voyage, shipwreck, capture by Indians and subsequent travels of the Quaker merchant Jonathan Dickinson and his family.

The map is oriented to the east and covers the eastern part of North America from approximately Lake Erie and New York and South to Jamaica. It includes Virginia, Florida, the Carolinas, and Cuba. A wavy line from Port Royal, Jamaica to Philadelphia traces Dickenson’s route by both sea and on land.

The map is of considerable interest from a cartographic point of view, and includes important features from earlier maps including descriptions of mountains, lakes and rivers. The map originally accompanied a rare 51 page narrative which described the adventures of the wealthy Quaker merchant Dickenson. The narrative was popular and considered among the best of the genre, known collectively as ‘Indian Captivity Tracts’. A lovely large decorative title cartouche embellishes the upper left quadrant.

Condition: This map is in A condition. The impression is bold and clear.
