This is an authentic antique map of the North Pacific from Siberian Asia to California. The map was published by the Gentleman’s Magazine out of London in 1754.
This intriguing map shows the North Pacific with very curious land and river delineations. The massive peninsula in the location of Alaska closely resembles present day Greenland and Northwest Canada are broken up by several major rivers, lakes, and waterways. One such waterway shows a direct path from Hudson Bay to the Pacific. According to the map, the navigator would have to maneuver their ship through Pontes Lake that holds numerous islands and the portage so as not to go over the 8 waterfalls all of which are 32 feet in height, followed by another major waterfall that spans across a smaller lake.
Throughout the map are tracks with notes of numerous historical voyages. Such voyages include that of Tchirikow, de Aguilar, de Fuca, Bernard, and of course, Behring. Discoveries and dates are included to correspond with the various voyages. One such discovery worth noting is the enormous West Sea, discovered by Juan de Fuca in 1592. This lovely, small map is essential to any North Pacific, Northwest Passage, or Sea of the West collector.
Condition: Map is in B condition with some tear restoration along the top margin.
