This print displays the ancient necropolis Naqsh-e Rostam, which is located near Persepolis in modern Iran. Naqsh-e Rostam features four complete tombs and a fifth unfinished tomb that have been carved into the side of a cliff. The tombs are believed to be the burial sites of five Achaemenid kings: Darius the Great, Darius II, Darius III, Xerxes, and Artaxerxes III.
In addition to the royal tombs, Naqsh-e Rostam features a number of decorative reliefs that depict important moments in Persian history. The most famous of these reliefs celebrates the military victories of Sasanian king Shapur the Great over three Roman Emperors.
The print is taken from Henri Chatelain’s Atlas Historique, one of the most widely distributed atlases of the 18th century.
Condition: This print is in A condition with a sharp vertical fold and a minor tear along the bottom margin.
