This is an authentic antique map of the Northern Atlantic by Johannes Van Keulen. The map was published in Amsterdam in the year 1684.
This is hand colored example of Van Keulen’s nautical map of the Northern Atlantic showing portions of Newfoundland, Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, and the British Isles. Numerous other small islands, towns, ports, and bays are labeled throughout the map. In the top left, a legend states in Dutch, “Here is fresh fish, dead whales, white foxes and fresh salmon.”
Rhumb lines intertwine from end to end while a large compass rose punctuates the center of the map. A decorative cartouche within Greenland depicts native hunters and a whaling scene.
Condition: Map is in B condition with superb color on heavy paper, but trimmed margins on either side.
