This is an authentic antique map of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by Johannes Van Keulen. The map is published in Amsterdam in the year 1684.
This lovely sea chart is one of the earliest maps of any kind to focus specifically on Puerto Rico and the surrounding islands. The map reaches as far east to include the islands of St. Martin and Anguilla and west to include a partial coastline of the Dominican Republic. At upper right are insets of the harbor of San Juan and of Simpson Bay (or Marigot) on the west coast of Saint Martin.
Like most sea charts names of coastal towns and ports are listed while the interior remains void of any detail. Rhumb lines intertwine the map while two compass roses and a sailing ship adorn the vast sea. A decorative cartouche in the lower left includes three scales of distance.
Condition: Map is in A condition with superb original color on heavy paper. A small oxidation spot is apparent in the lower margin.
