Novi Belgii Quod nunc Novi Jorck, vocatur Nova qe Angliae & Partis Virginiae Accuratissima et Novissima Delineatio.

By: John Ogilby

Date: 1670 (Published) Amsterdam

Dimensions: 11.5 x 14.5 inches (29.2 cm x 36.8 cm)

This remarkable antique map was engraved by John Ogilby, and published in 1671 by Arnoldus Montanus. It is based, as were many other maps, on the iconographic work by Jansson-Visscher, which was the most influential map of the region for more than 40 years.

Lovely renderings of local fauna from the Jansson-Visscher map decorate open spaces, including illustrations of various fauna indigenous to the Americas, including bears, deer, a fox, beaver, a crane, a muskrat, rabbits and a turkey.

The lower right quadrant is embellished with an ornate cartouche illustrating indigenous peoples engaged in the various tasks of everyday life such as hunting, fishing, skinning of game, bundling of furs and firing of clay.

Though there is no indication of the Great Lakes, the map offers considerable detail throughout, including the names and territories of various Indian tribes. The contours and landmarks of the east coast are minutely detailed.

Condition: This map is in B condition. It is a strong, bold impression which has been trimmed to the image. Minor tears in the edges have been repaired with archival material.
