This is an authentic antique map of the Pacific Ocean by Jan Jansson. The map was published out of Amsterdam in 1650.
Jansson’s sea chart of the Pacific is the first recorded sea chart to be published in a Dutch atlas. The map is also the first sea chart to show California as an island. This map is a great representation of the state of geographic knowledge of the Pacific Rim. A long string of islands stretching northwest from Tierra del Fuego are likely the remnants of Terra Australis. Jansson notes their discovery by the Spanish explorer Hernando Gallego in the year 1576. Australia is in its earlier stages mapping following its discovery by Willem Janszoon on the Duyfken in 1606. The northeast peninsula is depicted with a possible connection to New Guinea.
In the north, Korea is shown as an island and Hokkaido is not indicated north of Japan. A massive strip of landed marked Terra Incognita nearly connects Asia with the island of California, separated by Fretum Anian. While the island of California is shown to mostly resemble the Briggs model at first glance, the influence of Peter Goos is also apparent in that the island lacks the second Punta de la Concepcion. Many place names are given throughout the island as well as along the western coast of the Americas.
Condition: Map is in B+ condition, with browning, which is common among these maps. The map also displays healthy original coloring.
