Geographical Distribution of the Currents of Aire or of the Perennial, Periodical and Variable winds. Showing also The Various Regions of Prevalent Hurricanes; Extended from the Original Map of Professor Berghaus.

By: A.K. Johnston

Date: 1848 (Published) Edinburgh

Dimensions: 19.75 x 23 inches (50.2 x 58.4 cm)

A map detailing surface winds and other weather related phenomena would have been of enormous value to navigators of seagoing vessels in the middle of the 19th century.

This map, based on the work of German professor Berghaus, provides such information to the extent possible at the time, as it depicts wind patterns which were typically prevalent in various areas of the globe. In addition, Johnston rendered in some detail the path of the devastating Rodriguez Hurricane of 1843.

The map contains a number of insets. A note in the upper right quadrant states that the map was based on original journals, observations and remarks made during a twenty year period of oceanic voyages. This map is from the first edition of an atlas published by Johnston in 1848.

Condition: This map is in A condition with full margins and no tears or holes.
