Exciting map depicting the earliest California gold mines which resulted from the discovery of gold along the American River by Sutter in 1848.

Published in the very year of Sutter’s discovery, it is thought to be one of the first published maps of the area and is the first official map featuring the mines, having been issued in a government publication which accompanied an address by then President Polk to Congress on 5 December 1848. The message confirmed the discovery of gold in California, and the map delineated the area, leading to the start of the gold rush of 1849.  Each mine of that time is numbered and named.

Condition: This linen backed folding map is in A condition with some faint soiling at fold lines and edges. Holes at folds of the map are reinforced by the linen backing.
