DESCRIPTION
This colorful antique map of Washington D.C. shows the weekly schedule of street sweeping throughout the nation's capitol in the 1890s. This is an interesting concept given cleanliness of cities throughout the country was of great importance in the latter half of the 19th century.
Many of the streets are colored entirely or partially blue, indicating a sweeping schedule of 1 to 2 times a week respectively. Pennsylvania Avenue and many of its surrounding streets between the White House and Capitol Hill are colored green, indicating a daily sweeping schedule. The western extent of Pennsylvania Avenue is colored orange, which notes that it was sept three times per week.
This map was one of twelve statistical maps produced in an effort to present large-scale improvements in the infrastructure of the city since the Greene maps of 1880. Each map was drawn on an identical scale and included the prefix “Statistical Map No" before each unique title. Above the title is a full list of avenues names along with their width in feet.
This map and its counterparts offer a unique glimpse into the state of development in the Capitol of the United States just before the turn of the 20th Century.
