William Seward, steel engraving after a daguerrotype published in 1856; with facsimile autograph and view of his home in Auburn N.Y.
Published at the time he was seeking the Republican nomination for president (which went to Fremont). Lincoln's secretary of State; survived the assassination attempt in 1865, and is also remembered for "Seward's Folly"-the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
