This is an original, hand colored print showing Chicago in the year 1833 signed by Raoul Varin and numbered 36 of 125. Varin's prints were later produced in greater numbers for the Century of Progress World's Fair, but none of those reprints were signed or numbered.
This print is engraved in aquatint, which is an intaglio printmaking technique that produces a tone rather than lines, giving it a visual effect resembling a watercolor. The image shows the intersection of North, South and Main branches of the Chicago River, known as "Wolf Point". James Kinzie built that first tavern (top left) in 1830. A wolf sign is placed above the cabin on the left side.
Additional scenes show action between the natives and locals. There are adult natives in canoes, a young native with his horse, a native mother with her papoose, and men goose hunting.
Condition: This print is in very fine condition with lovely color and full margins on all sides. The piece is currently framed and can be sold / shipped as such for an added shipping cost or removed from the frame and shipped alone at our standard low rate.
