An original late 19th century fine art print of a painting by the Brazilian artist, Henrique Bernardelli, that was on display at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This antique print,  was part of the 1893 Geo. Barrie publication of Art and Architecture by William Walton.

Messalina was the third wife of Roman emperor Claudius, and Nero's cousin.  She was known for her licentious behaviour and instigating murderous court intrigues. She allegedly conspired against her husband and was executed on the discovery of her plot.

"The artist has suggested the curious untamed animal nature not by any ugliness of mind or body, but by the more suggestive devices of the darkened countenance and lowering brow and the abandon of the pose."

Condition:  This print is in A- condition on heavy 19th century fine art paper that displays an embossed Columbian Exposition stamp of authenticity.  There is a minor stain in the left margin, not a part of the image.
