1987 Soviet Civil Defense Posters - Complete Set of 25
DESCRIPTION
An uncommon, complete set of 25 Soviet civil defense posters that presents a comprehensive visual guide to nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare preparedness, as well as emergency response to natural disasters.
Created under the authority of the State Committee of the USSR for Vocational and Technical Education, with text by S. N. Semenov and V. G. Rogozin and illustrations by V. G. Udod, the posters combine technical accuracy with bold, didactic artwork. Their purpose was both practical and ideological as the were made to educate workers and students while reinforcing the importance of collective responsibility in civil defense.
Issued in large format and richly illustrated, the posters cover an extensive range of subjects such as the destructive factors of nuclear explosions and their impact zones, the use of shelters and protective equipment, evacuation procedures, medical kits and prophylaxis, sanitary treatment and decontamination, agricultural and livestock protection, as well as the operation of dosimeters, Geiger counters, and chemical detection devices. They also instruct on civil defense organization in schools and workplaces, the meaning of alarm signals, and the conduct of rescue and recovery operations in both wartime and peacetime emergencies.
Produced at a time when fears of nuclear conflict coexisted with the fresh memory of the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, the set reflects the late Soviet effort to prepare its citizens for both man-made and natural catastrophes. As such, these posters stand as striking artifacts of Cold War educational culture, balancing scientific instruction with propaganda-style visual clarity.
