Carte De L'Ile De Madagascar Contenant Sa Description & Diverses Partiicularitez Curieues De Ses Habitants Tant Blancs que Negres

By: Henri Abraham Chatelain

Date: 1719 (published) Amsterdam

Dimensions: 15 x 17 inches (38 x 43.2cm)

This is a fine example of an original uncolored map of Madagascar with a series of prints illustrating the indigenous people, their traditional garb, culture, and methods of transportation, weapons, and customs. These illustrated scenes include a beheading, a funeral ceremony, archery practice, a native dance, and canoe travel. The map is oriented with west at the top and north to the right. The island is divided by kingdoms, which offers a snapshot view of the rich and interesting history of Madagascar.

Condition: This print is in A condition. A strong impression on clean paper and with ample margins on all sides. Some light paper toning and soiling exists along the centerfold which is quite common among these maps.
