A unique opportunity to own the complete Tour Through Yellowstone National Park map, guide book, and stereoscope set with viewer published by Underwood & Underwood in 1905.

It was not very long after Yellowstone became the world's the first ever national park on March 1, 1872 that people from around the country and world began visiting to see its abundant wildlife and geothermal natural wonders. The primary method of transportation to the park in the early 20th century was via the Northern Pacific Railroad to the stop in Gardiner, Montana where one could board a six horse stage coach that would bring them through the North Gate of the park. Unfortunately such a trip was not affordable for much of the country, so the next best thing was to visit the park through the Stereoscope.

This complete stereoscope set consists of thirty sites throughout the park. Each site is numbered in the map, has its own description in the book, and a stereo-card that when place in the viewer provides an amazing 3D visual that gives the user a unique sense of being their themselves. The earliest for of this technology was invented by Sir Charles Wheatstone and constructed for him by optician R. Murray in 1832. In 1861, Oliver Wendell Holmes created and deliberately did not patent a handheld, streamlined, much more economical viewer than had been available before. His version of the stereoscope utilized here, consisted of two prismatic lenses and a wooden stand to hold the stereo card.

Together, the guidebook, map, thirty stereo-cards and viewer provide great enjoyment for anyone with an interest in Yellowstone National Park or historic imagery.

Condition: Some wear to the casing, but the book, cards, and viewer are all in great working shape and ready for immediate use. The map is folded and remains attached to the book as originally issued.
