By: Lieut. George Derby

Date: 1849 (dated) Washington D.C.

Dimensions: 22 x 17.5 inches (55.9 x 44.5 cm)

An important California Gold Rush map that is described by the highest authority on maps of Western America, Carl Wheat as "One of the Earliest Maps of the Gold Regions of California Based Upon Actual Observations."

The map centers on the small settlements of Fremont and Vernon, with Sacrament just below, situated at the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers. Just due east is the location where gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill one year earlier, sparking one of the greatest gold rushes the world has ever know, earning anyone who traveled to this remote region the title of a 49er.

The map is loaded with interesting details, being that made from actual surveys and not a compiling of information from various sources as is the case with most other maps. Rivers are well defined with groves of trees on either sides of their banks. The topography of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains is depicted in an interesting manner, accentuating the hilly nature of the region. Notes are given throughout, some read "Plains usually overflowed in water, fine grazing," "Large herds of wild cattle and horses," and "Elk and Antelope." Routes leading throughout the region are also delineated and include that of Lawson, the southern branch of the Oregon Trail, and several wagon roads to ranches and mines.

This map offers a great look at the Gold Region of California in an almost tranquil manner, never mind the mayhem of humanity scrambling through the hills seeking life-changing fortunes.

Condition: This map is in B condition with foxing throughout and some loss to the right margin, just extending into the neat line in some places. Overall, the toning is quite uniform and offers a testament to its age and authenticity.
